Death Dialogue

“Requiems, Remembrance and Mourning”
by Bastienne Schmidt and Philippe Cheng

In 2020 each conversation will focus on a theme such as grief, aging, death…  There will be a short presentation and then as always a time to break into smaller groups for an open space to share thoughts, fears, beauty, perspectives and experiences in regard to death and dying. We have yet to settle on all of the themes so if you have something you would like to share, please do let us know through our Contact Form.
Following are the 2020 dates for the quarterly conversations. Each event will be held at The Commons Community and Art Center **at 7pm

Thursday, February 20th; Thursday, May 21st; Thursday,  August 20; Thursday, November 19th

“How do people come to the acceptance of death?”
Jasmine will give a few examples through sharing stories. Then we will break into small groups in which we can share our own stories, thoughts, fears, perspectives and experiences in regard to death and dying. As always this event is free and open to all. There will be tea and treats.

When they were born, their family cared for them; when they died, their family cared for them. Dying, like birthing was integrated into living. Caring for those who had died was not only the last act of love, it was the first step of healing. This workshop will give you the information and hands-on practice to prepare you to care for your family member after death at home, and to carry out a home or family-directed funeral with or without the services of a funeral director.

More about the Altar...

We chose to host this celebration of the arts near All Souls Day intentionally. As part of that, we are creating an Altar of Remembrance for the artists, musicians, writers, and creative loved ones who have passed from this world who we want to include in this evening. Please contact us if you would like to have your loved one represented on the altar. It would involve bringing something that represents them and/or their work that would fit on the altar.

What is Green Burial? What is a Conservation Cemetery?

We are offering this three-film series exploring the development of three natural burial grounds in the US. Our hope is to start a conversation about what we can envision here in western Wisconsin to care for our dead with minimal environmental impact while restoring or preserving valuable habitat.

One man has and he has taken it one step further, he not only wants to live green but he wants die green as well and is helping others do the same. Dying Green, a short documentary by Ellen Tripler set in the foothills of the Appalachians, explores one man’s vision of using green burials to conserve land. Dr. Billy Campell, the town’s only physician and his efforts have radically changed our understanding of burials in the United States.
